A dimensional scenic environment created to transform a stage into a recognizable ancient fortified setting.

The Need

The production needed a visual environment that could immediately communicate the setting of the Wall of Jericho and help move the audience into the story.

Create the Setting, Not Just a Backdrop.

A flat backdrop alone would not create the scale or dimensional presence the scene needed.

The Challenge

Make a Stage Feel Larger Than It Is.

The scenic elements needed to create the impression of a substantial stone structure while still functioning as a stage set.

The design also needed enough texture, depth, and variation to keep the wall from reading as a simple flat surface.

The Solution

Build the Illusion Through Scale, Texture and Layers.

Karl developed a dimensional wall environment using varied stone shapes, towers, architectural sections, a doorway, and foreground rock formations.

The combination of height, surface texture, overlapping pieces, and dimensional elements helped create a much stronger sense of an ancient structure than a single painted background could provide.

The completed scenic build brought the ancient scale to life, combining hand-carved textures and structural elements into a single, cohesive theatrical landscape.
